Are you overwhelmed by your job search (or anything for that matter)? A few days ago I was thinking about all the times in my life when I’ve been overwhelmed. Tapped out. Maxed out.
There is one specific time that comes to mind when I was logging over 100K miles per year for work. My plate was full at work and at home – in fact, so full it became clear there would be spaghetti spilling EVERYWHERE if I didn’t get control of it.
(Come to think of it…it’s totally possible there already was and I just put a magazine over top of it to hide the stains. Sigh…)
With each new day I felt heavier as more and more “to-do’s” were adding up to the list…and that list was a lot longer than a CVS receipt!
Have you been this tapped out before? Well there’s hope…
Here’s what I did.
I became really great at asking the question “WHO” not “HOW”.
When you ask HOW to get something done it implies YOU are the only one who CAN or HAS to do it.
When you ask WHO can get something done it opens your mind to the possibility that there are other people who CAN also do it. And quite possibly people who know how to do it better and faster.
I’ve never been particularly shy to ask for help so this concept wasn’t too challenging to embrace. I’ve heard the phrase, “it takes a village” and it was time to call in my village – past due, actually.
So – I took a hot minute to regroup and made a list of “all of the things” and categorized them in 3 groups.
Group 1: Things I personally HAVE TO BE THE ONE TO DO.
Group 2: Things I WANT to do, but MY VILLAGE can also do.
Group 3: Things that MY VILLAGE CAN DO.
A word of caution: Just because you can physically do something or want to do something, it doesn’t mean you should! Consider your return on investment (ROI)! Turns out I had a lot of things in my group 2 list. You may, too.
Once I was clear on my categories I was ready to activate my village. I was ready to reward myself with more time (and sanity) by outsourcing a few things. First on the list – a house cleaning service! (Remember those spaghetti stains?)
I can’t even tell you the feeling I had when this amazing cleaning team left my house. I literally had tears streaming down my face. As this and other tasks got taken off the plate I felt so much lighter and knew that everything was going to be ok. What took a little bit of money saved me a ton of time and even more money in the long run as I was able to focus on the main ROI for my family. My only regret was that I didn’t activate outsourcing sooner!
When it comes to your job search, what can you outsource TODAY? While you have to own your job search, you can bring in the experts to teach you exactly how to make your dream a reality. Let me be part of your village! If you are overwhelmed by the thought of how to make this career transition a reality, I got you! Don’t wait until you’re drowning. You’re just a call away…
